Mike Haw is a man with a taste for adventure, but now he has opted for taste of a different kind.

In the last few years he has roamed the world, working in restaurants, shooting lodges and chalets from Australia to the US, and the French Alps to the Scottish Highlands.
He has even found time to take his yachtmaster qualifications and become a qualified pilot.
But now he is back home in Sheffield, lured by the prospect of running one of the city's most stylish restaurants.
Mike is the new manager of the Wig & Pen pub and restaurant in Campo Lane. He has been appointed by owners Malcolm Schooling and Craig Smith, who also own Platillos in Leopold Square.
Says Malcolm: "Mike's a well-travelled man who's brought back to Sheffield a wealth of experience.
"For the majority of his career he has run luxury ski chalets. His last venture was the Chalet du Cret, Val D'Isere's premier chalet, catering for the rich and famous in absolute luxury.
"Attention to detail and delivering high standards to exacting guests is part of what Mike does naturally. His experiences have also given him a great love of quality food and fine wines."
Completing the new team at the Wig & Pen is head chef Nick Booth, a Glaswegian who has moved over from Platillos.
They have already launched new modern British menus and are aiming to establish the Wig & Pen as the city's leading 'best of British' pub - while also promoting it as a party and wedding venue.
Features will include a monthly wine and food nights; the next is planned for July 14.

The first week of June sees the very first Sheffield Food Festival – bringing the thriving Sheffield food scene together in a week-long extravaganza. One of our contributions to this gastro week is to hold a special tasting menu evening. Featuring 5 courses from our new menu, matched with 5 wines, all for just £25 per person. We are glad to announce that Nick Booth has become our new Head Chef.  Nick, formally Head Chef at Trippets wine bar and chef at Platillos, has joined the team this month.  Originally from Glasgow, Nick has worked in restaurants around the county for ten years and is passionate about traditional food done well.  We think he'll be a great addition to the team and look forward to his new summer menu!

We've introduced a few new beers to the bar.  As well as the usual Amstel and Budvar lagers, we will also be serving Tiger and Sagres on draft.  For the lovers of bitter, we've now got Theakstons Bitter on draft.   And for the cider fans among you, we have expanded our range of ciders, and now have our Addlestones scrumpy and the new clear dry Symonds, perfect for a warm spring or summer evening.

We are still holding our networking events on the first Wednesday of every month.  It is a good opportunity to meet other indiviudals involved in both corporate and small business in Sheffield.  We serve a hot buffet and drinks in our private functions rooms, for £15.  The next networking events will be held on March 3rd, April 7th and May 5th.

2010 at the Wig & Pen is all about celebrating Great British Food.  We have launched a new menu this week which reflects our love of all things British.  The menu includes immediate favourites such as the  daily home made meat pie and a daily home made vegetable pie, kippers on toast, devilled kidneys, a daily roast with all the trimmings, our own version of fish and chips..... the list goes on.  We will be serving one menu throughout the day so that you can choose whatever takes your fancy at any time of day.

It's a new year and so time for a new menu.

We are focusing on our Great British Food, paying homage to classic British dishes.

The menu includes:

Roast duck breast served with beetroot

Venison stew with dumplings

Freshly baked pies, fillings change daily

Carmalised onion and sage tart

The menu launches on Monday 18th January.

We have joined 99 other Sheffield based organisations and businesses in the challenge to raise as much cash as possible over 6 months. This year it is all to benefit the Sheffield Childrens Hospital. We'll be keeping the website up to date with our various attempts to raise oodles of cash for such a fine cause.

Trevor, our wonderful accountant, has made a great start with his copletion of the Sheffield Half Marathon  - he didnt quite get the time he set out for, but there is no doubt that no-one we know would have come in earlier than him. He reckons he's raised £3-£400 quid, so well done Trevor, fantastic!

We hope to involve customers in some of our fundraising initiatives, so watch this space for ways in which you can get involved.

The launch of our new dinner menu has gone down a storm.  The first night saw a stream of regulars and new diners enjoying our extended range of local fare in the Georgian Dining Rooms.  New Restaurant Manager, Chris Gittins, commented that "feedback on the new menu has been excellent, with guests particularly happy to see the return of some old favourites, as well as the addition of a gourmet burger alongside the traditional a la carte offerings".  Booking is recommended, but we will always try to accommodate guests making last minute dinner plans.  See the "Food & Drink" tab for the full menu.
